Adaptations Of The Battlestar Galactica Story
by Willard Y. Wuckert
People all over the world have embraced the characters, worlds, and stories of the Battlestar Galactica franchise. The complete universe of this sci-fi storyline began in 1978, but since then it has expanded dramatically to include several different television series, novels, comic books, and even video games. The story that was first presented in that series has been re-imagined, adapted, and extended in many ways over the years in order to appease fans who are always hungry for more. There have been many interesting changes and additions to the story of BGS through the years but it all came from the original concepts and characters that were created back in 1978.
Battlestar Galactica began in 1978 as a television series that was created by Glen Larson and was later followed by a 1980 sequel series that continued the roles of a few characters from the original. The basic concepts of the TV show's plot were that a race of humans from a distance galaxy were being attacked by the Cylons, a race of cybernetic creatures. The fans of the show were so devoted and hence upset about its cancellation after just one season that some protested at the TV studio where the decision to cancel was made.
A fresh version of the original television series was released starting in 2003 with a three hour miniseries and continuing as a weekly show from 2004 to 2009. The series was updated and tweaked to fit to the ideas of the producers; this included some significant changes to certain characters from the original show. Because it ran for several seasons, the creators were able to spend more time developing story arcs for individual characters and for the series as a whole.
After the Battlestar Galactica series ended in 2009, work began on spin off projects that would continue to expand on the characters and themes made popular in the TV show. An example is Caprica, a prequel series which ran for one season in 2010 and offered additional information about what happened before the first episode of BGS.
There are many hardcore Battlestar Galactica fans who love to get their hands on all creative material that adds life to this unique sci-fi universe. The war between the humans and the Cylon will not end, whether it be in new online games or in upcoming television programs.
