If you like to do some basic fixing of some damaged things at home, read on. Below you can find an easy-to-follow DIY guide on repairing rotten timber windows. Through some simple steps, you don't have to hire a carpenter.
Eventually, a wooden frame's weatherproofing will succumb to constant exposure to the various elements. This can cause the timber underneath to rot. Most of the time, you can tell the problem just by observing the surface. But it's possible that it's much bigger than it seems. Using a screwdriver or any hard tool, tap around the structure to inspect the damage.
A small softened portion of the structure may be removed by using a slotted screwdriver. Use a chisel if you need to get rid of a large area. But if the problem has gotten deep into the frame, you might want to use a saw to cut it away. Experts suggest that you have to chip away 20 mm of sound wood around the problem area. Straight cuts are likely to be more visible, so stick to making angled cuts.
If the gap left there is shallow, you may fill it with epoxy or plastic wood. If the filling material needs some mixing, follow the directions on the packaging. Pack the material as tightly as possible. There are times when you need to make holes in the frame to allow the epoxy or plastic wood to adhere well to it.
The filling material usually requires at least 24 hours of drying time. To check if it's set, tap on it. It should be as hard as the rest of the frame. Smooth away imperfections with the use of sandpaper.
In case the gap that's left is too large to be filled with epoxy or putty, you have to use timber to repair it. Use the gap itself as a template to transfer the shape onto the wood using a pencil. Cut away the piece using a saw.
Hold the piece of timber in place using wood glue. If it's too heavy a piece, secure it with of wooden pegs, nails or screws. Any visible gap or imperfection must be filled with epoxy or plastic wood. Allow it to dry thoroughly before you sand it down.
Prime the repaired area and paint using the same shade as the frame. There are instances wherein you have to repaint the whole structure to make the repaired portion even more inconspicuous. After the paint has dried completely, apply a couple of coats of sealant.
