Free Mac Software?

by Daniel Jones

OK. You say Free but exactly what is mac freeware?

Quite often the title "Freeware" is used incorrectly. It may be the use of the word "Free" in the title that has caused the definition to become confused with most people thinking that they can use this software however they like. with 'Freeware' this is not the case.

With Freeware the author still retains the rights to the software and the software is still licensed but they allow you the license for an unlimited time with no cost. There are usually one or more restricted usage rights, this could be that the software is not modified in any way, that no one else other than themselves are allowed to distribute the software or that you can not make derivative works from the software.

What's the point of this? Why not just give it away?

The simple answer is that although you can use the software for as long as you like without payment, there is rather often a business or marketing motivation behind the cost free license. For example, the developer wants you to use a 'Lite' version of the software and be so impressed with it that you buy the full pro copy or they would like you to go to their website to download it where they hope to tempt you with other goods.

Does this signify that Freeware is bad? No. How can something that you can use for free be bad?

OK. There may be some marketing behind allowing you to use the software for free but you still get to use it no matter what the scheme is. Maybe the lite version is enough for your needs but if you are tempted by the pro version at least you have had a good (Free) opportunity to review the lite version.

What kind of software is "Free Software"?

Absolutely free software is know as "Free Software" but this again is a term that has become misused so I would double check by reading any licences or small print before using it as a base to develop your own software.

Here a a couple or other terms relating to Free Software where the meanings have become misused.

Shareware - This type of software you can distribute as much as you like as long as you don't take payment or modify the source code. Usually, this software gives you a licence to use the software for a set period (typically 30 days) after which time you need to make a payment to the developer to continue using it.

Open Source - You can modify and distribute this software however much you like. You can use it to create your own software packages and some of the best software around is open source software. What you are never allowed to do is to sell anything that you create from using someone elses open source software. You must also always credit the original author of the software and leave any credit tags embedded within it.

Apple <a href="http://www.applemacfreeware.com/">Mac Freeware</a> is the best resource of Free Mac Software on the internet. You won't find any Shareware or paid software listed on our website just 100% <a href="http://ezinearticles.com/?Exactly-What-Is-Freeware?&id=6231000">Free Software for Mac</a>.
