If you're the indecisive type, buying a new mountain bike can seem like a totally laborious task. So many choices is enough to completely confuse anyone (unless you're an expert!). Should you go for a hard tail frame or full suspension? What type of brakes should you choose? How many gears do you need? There's so much to think about and just to make things even more confusing, now you have the choice between regular 26inch wheels and the increasingly popular 29inch.
29 inch wheels or '29ers' are becoming more and more popular with mountain bikers and the debate on whether they are a good or bad idea is rife at the moment. There are several pros and cons that need to be considered before making that all-important decision. The main thing that you need to understand is how much difference there is between the 29er and the regular-sized wheel.
At first, you might not think that there is a great deal of difference in terms of size. But when you see the wheels side-by-side, those three inches are very noticeable. It might not sound like a massive increase, but don't let that deceive you! All the fuss about the difference between the 26inch and 29inch frames happens for a reason!
The main benefit of having the extra diameter on your wheels is that you can tackle small rocks and divots with minimum effort. The extra diameter allows the wheel to travel over small obstacle virtually effortlessly and with the extra comfort. With 29er wheels, you pretty much get the same ride as you'd expect from a bike with dual suspension, mainly because of the added weight and a slight decrease in manoeuvrability.
29inch wheels can run at low pressure, which means that the surface area of the tyre increases, therefor giving you extra grip and a straighter ride. This extra grip and larger diameter means that it is more difficult to make tighter turns, particularly at speed. This means that if you plan to take technical trails with lots and twists and turns, the 29er is perhaps not the best choice for you. However, if you plan to take long trails with lots of obstacles, the 29er would be a great choice.
It's clear to see why 29er mountain bikes are becoming so popular. Take a look for yourself here.
