If you think back, you surely can remember that lovely $40 outfit you bought for your baby, the one that was only worn three times before it became too small. Baby clothing can get very expensive, and the worst thing is that growing babies will not wear it for long. If you like other parents, are on a budget, saving money on your baby's clothing is going to be a necessity.
Designer duds for baby DO make sense though - and by designer, I mean the elite in the baby design field: OshKosh and Baby B'Gosh, Carters, Sweat Pea and other top-of-the-line baby clothing manufacturers. The products these manufacturers produce are much more detailed to promote comfort, fit and appearance. They have seams that lay flat and don't bother the baby's skin, and snaps that don't break through the fabric. But you don't want to pay $30 for a sleeper!
The best thing to do is to look around for gently used baby clothing that's of good quality, or check with friends and family to see if they have any hand-me-downs they can pass on. You can find great deals at yard sales, usually in the spring and summer months. You might be able to find clothes in sizes for the next couple of years that have barely been worn. Check the newspaper for upcoming yard sales - baby clothes are often one of the advertised items.
Another great place to buy designer baby clothes at rock-bottom prices is a good consignment shop. If you can create a relationship with the owner, she might even keep you posted when new items come in, if she sees something that fits your needs. And the best part out of this is that you might even be able to sell the clothes back to the store after you no longer need them, or you might be able to trade them for the next size up.
How about a place to get gently used baby clothing for the cost of the gas to go pick them up? Freecycle.org is a national movement that promotes recycling of every item. Check http://www.freecycle.org to see if there's a chapter near you, and join up. Seldom a day goes by that someone doesn't offer a few bags of baby and children's clothing in various sizes. The quality varies, but the younger the baby, the more likely that the clothing is still in excellent shape.
And certainly, you shouldn't miss the chance of looking at church sales and thrift shops for wonderful bargains on high quality baby clothing. If you have a Junior League thrift shop in your area, you should definitely check it out, as they usually carry high quality baby clothing.
When you do pick up used clothing for baby, launder it as soon as you get it home. If you see any stains, pre-treat them before washing, and then launder with a laundry detergent especially formulated for babies. Adding Borax or bleach to the water will help you get stains out and bring out the white, but especially if you use bleach, make sure you double rinse. Once the clothes have been treated and washed, nobody will be able to tell anyone used them before you did.
