A beginners guide to restoring a classic Mercedes

by Charlie D. Boyle

An enjoyable past time for many motoring enthusiasts is to restore classic cars. Amazing bargains be found at classic car auctions, yet these cars will often require a lot of care and attention to restore them to their former glory. If you're lucky enough to find a bargain, such as a classic Mercedes Benz, why not try your hand at restoration.

You don't necessarily have to be an expert when it comes to restoration, but a bit of knowledge is certainly beneficial. There are plenty of online resources, where you can read up on restoration and these resources will go into as much or as little detail as you feel you need. Don't set your heart on restoring the car to its original condition at first, as this will take time and a bit of skill. However, with a bit of know how, you should be able to bring a new lease of life to an old car.

You will need to check your car thoroughly. Go over it with a fine-toothed comb to identify any parts that may be beyond repair. If that's the case, you'll need to source some spares. Again, check online as old Mercedes parts should be readily available from specialist dealers. Some parts will be as good as new with a bit of a clean up.

Unless you plan to replace your engine, you will need to take the whole thing out and clean it properly. Only by taking the engine out will you be able to perform some of the essential repair work. Some parts of the engine will not be able to be reached from the under side of the car. The seats of the car can often be salvaged by being reupholstered, which should be done by a professional, as this is a very tricky job.

The last job of the restoration should be applying the paint. The colour scheme doesn't necessarily have to be the same as the original, so keep your eyes open for inspiration. When all the work is complete, take the car for a test spin to identify any problems as soon as possible. Keep test-driving until everything is in complete working order.
