When does vomiting change from baby vomiting to toddler vomiting? There must be a moment of maturity where the people stop finding something heart-warming and cheering about the expulsion of matter and fluid from a child.
A man walking through the supermarket with the white streak of fatherhood emblazoned down his back rarely attracts the sickened winces or breathless gags that would follow Toddler Vomit. Instead, understanding looks of delight and subtle touches pass between nostalgic parents of teenagers yearning for those days when the worst insult to come from their child's mouth was with a burp.
To most observers, Toddler Vomit is similar to Adult Vomit. In general appearance, the mixture is one of solid food and a soup-like solution of water and digestive juices, and it has sewer-based fragrance.
Psychological studies have proven that the guilt associated with vomiting is a product of age. A toddler can throw up two meals and an ice cream without even a blush of embarrassment, but adults know they have done something to deserve it. Toddlers rarely over-indulge in champagne and a curry, they never bring home the poorly refrigerated piece of chicken and they fall asleep in Hugh Grant movies long before the drivel affects them.
But, for this very reason, we should and do leap to our feet at the first tell-tale gurgle in a toddler's throat. Only months after almost being patted on the back for having a pale, smelly patch on it, a new dad, on the shore of a sea of Toddler Vomit, will be met with "What did you do to him?". Should he deflect the challenge, "What did you give him?" will follow. Listing the day's menu, leaving out the fizzy drink, lollies and doughnuts, will at least gain the assurance that, "I'm not cleaning it up!".
With all the love he can muster, Dad will push the satisfied smirk on his toddler's face into the region of his memory kept for revenge and wade into the task of mopping the output of toddler vomiting from the kitchen tiles.
