You should always read any reviews of the game before you decide to play them. This means you are less likely to waste your time. I tend to stay away from games that don't have at least three stars. Some of the less reputable gaming websites have dodgy reviews so you will not want to trust everything you read. If you visit a gaming site and all their games have five stars then you would be advised to run a mile.
There are some great blogs out there written by online gaming enthusiasts. A lot of these blogs will tell you which games are worth playing and which are just going to waste your time. I have subscribed to a few of these blogs with my RSS reader.
