How To Find Natural Skin Care For Nappy Rash On Your Baby

by Helen Miller

Nobody likes nappy rash. Not baby, not mummy and daddy and nobody who is in hearing range. With the best will in the world, even the most devoted parents can't be around to change nappies every hour of the day. Sooner or later, almost every infant between the ages of nine and twelve months is affected by a sore, blotchy red bottom. This is caused by the contents of a wet or soiled nappy coming into contact with the baby's delicate skin. Understandably, most parents don't like the idea of having harsh chemicals coming into contact with their child. Fortunately, there are several methods of natural skin care for nappy rash.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Nappy rash is inevitably caused by nappies. The best way to avoid it is to let your baby go commando as often and as long as possible. Just let them lay on a layer of absorbent material and mop up as necessary. Of course, this is not always practical, for example, on public transport or in the shops.

The next best thing to air drying baby's bottom is to use cloth nappies and not to use plastic or rubber pants over them. Cloth allows the skin to breathe and helps to avoid the unpleasant rash from developing. This method if somewhat messy and inconvenient but it is far cheaper and much kinder to the environment. Keep your baby's bottom green and dry.

Disposable nappies seem to be most parents' method of choice for infant waste management. Technology has come a long way from the messy layer of cotton tucked between two layers of plastic of yesteryear. Today's disposables are engineered to keep moisture away from the skin. They have cloth nappies beat in terms of convenience.

Frequent changes and scrupulous cleansing with gentle products go a long way towards protecting sensitive skin. Special baby balms containing calming ingredients like calendula or camomile also help soothe baby's bottom.

A strategy recommended by naturopaths involves applying egg whites to the nappy area. Cleanse and dry the area with cotton wool soaked in boiled water that has been cooled to room temperature. Apply a thin layer of egg white and apply a blow dryer on the 'cool' setting. Repeat twice until you have three coats of albumin, a protein found in egg white, built up.

Nappy rash is an inevitable consequence of being a modern baby. When natural preventative measures fail to hold back an outbreak, probably the best thing to use is a zinc oxide cream available from the chemist. This is the same substance used by Australian surfers to hold back sunburn and is made from completely natural ingredients.

Many babies get a nappy rash even the parent tries their best to prevent it. If your baby has this form of rash, you need to turn to natural skin care to help them.
