Camouflage Ghillie Suits

by Dexter Johnson

A ghillie suit, also referred to as a camo tent, wookie suit or yowie suit is a kind of camouflage clothes that is developed with heavy foliage for blending in a wooded atmosphere. The suit is created using a net fabric covered with loose pieces of string or cloth which makes it look like foliage and sticks. They come in a range of designs, shades, patterns and dimensions. A few ghillie suits have scraps of leaves that can be fastened and will move in the blowing wind the same manner as surrounding leaves.

Ghillie suits are created for hunters and snipers so they could blend into their environments to hide from targets or enemies. They were initially developed by Scottish gamekeepers as portable hunting blinds. The first military unit to use ghillie suits was the Scottish Highland regiment developed by the British Army throughout the 2nd Boer War.

Australian sniper's suits are nickname "yowies" because they look like the Yowie, an unknown great ape similar to the Yeti which is a large creature resembling a bear living in the Australian wilderness.

Premium quality ghillie suits are produced manually from as much as six pieces and are very time consuming to construct. Premium quality suits normally takes up to weeks or months to produce. Most army snipers in reality produce their very own unique suites from organic materials obtainable in the surroundings they function in.

Although ghillie suits are especially successful at hiding an individual, they are not practical for a large number of scenarios mainly because they are heavy and very hot. A suit, even in moderate climates can reach 120 degrees Fahrenheit and is commonly flammable unless of course treated with fire retardant.

Thanks to the Internet, many online outlets sell ghillie suits making them very easy to obtain. There are a number of brands which include Bushrag, Mossy Oak, RAP4 and Rancho Safari with prices ranging from $50 to $250.

Choosing the correct ghillie suits depends on what your hunting goal is. You may only need a jacket ghillie, instead of a full body ghillie in case you are hunting from a blind where only your upper body will be revealed. A Ghillie Poncho may give improved movement if you are hunting in dense low growing cover. Yet, if you are in the military as a sniper, you will need to select a good quality hand-made sniper suit for comfort and long life.

Utilizing a ghillie suit properly is extremely important. You should be aware of the available cover and choose the right suite to correctly blend into your environment.
