An important tip to consider in terms of parenting is to make sure that your actions follow the actions that you expect of your children. Children can cope with a friendly divorce better than they can if you drag out a failed marriage and are at each other's throats.
To get out the door on time in the morning, set an "alarm " - something fun and friendly, not jarring, to go off a few minutes before you need to be out the door. This will remind your kids how much time they have and to finish up what they are doing so they will be ready to go.
Rather than allowing your children to zone out mindlessly in front of the TV, encourage discussion about what they are watching. By engaging them in conversation, you can help them to learn new words, think critically, and become active consumers of media instead of just passively observing whatever is on.
Don't force your child to play competitive sports. It is sometimes tempting to manipulate a child into such choices because it is what we want. The reality is that our children are different than us. That is what makes them so precious. They may prefer participating in the drama club or chess club over participating in more physical sports.
A great way to spend time with your children on a regular basis is to have a family game night. Pick out a game that everyone will enjoy or let family members take turns choosing a game. Playing a game together as a family is a fun alternative to sitting around watching TV or each one going off and doing their own thing.
If you already have a child and you are considering a second but are scared that it will be doubly hard, you should reconsider this. The second child does not add anywhere near as much work to your life as the first did, and actually as your children grow having more than one will make your life easier.
