The first step in getting a new dog for a family is finding a breed that is going to suit the family's lifestyle. If the family are outdoor people then the breed they select should be one that loves the outdoors and will love walking and playing outside.
In such a circumstance both Labradors and Golden Retrievers are a great match. What's also great about these breeds is that the love children, which would be important for families. And talking about kids, no matter what breed you get, many parents ask themselves what they should teach their kids about the dog. Here are a few hints:
Doing his business: Your dog needs to be trained to do his business in a certain spot that you chose for him. It is a learning process, but it is important.
In order to help your dog with this, he needs to be taken to that place shortly after meals and immediately after waking up.
Next, when the dog is sleeping: Of course, your kids are excited to have their new dog home. How could they not be? And chances are they would love to play with your dog all the time. But your dog also needs sleep. And he should be left alone for that.
Additionally, your kids need to understand that they must be gentle to your dog at all times. This is very, very important.
Next, dogs may bite: This is important for our kids to appreciate. If they mistreat your dog in any way such as hitting, kicking, or poking him, he may show some initiative of his own.
This point really goes hand in hand with being gentle. Add to that being respectful to the dog and chances are he will not bite them.
However, since biting is such a serious issue, you should never leave your kids alone with the dog - just don't risk it.
