Installing Replacement Coils In Electric Stoves

by Lenora Obrien

People prefer to have electric stoves to gas ranges. Even though it can use up the electricity, it is easier to handle and is safe for the environment. From time to time, regular maintenance must be done to keep it in good condition. Calrods will need to have replacement coils before it causes problems.

To start off, one must have work gloves, cotton swabs, dielectric grease and the new heating element. Have them ready and within reach. Disconnect the stove from the plug. If one cannot reach around the plug, turn the power off from the circuit breaker. If you do this, prepare a flashlight as the power source of the room will be turn off as well.

These coils or heating elements are also called calrods. To remove them, one must locate the distal portion of the tubular surface. Reach under the receptacle and pull the distal end out slowly. Make sure that as you pull it out, no tears are left behind the receptacle.

Get a dielectric grease. This is used to prevent the coil from corrosion. It keeps the area where it is applied on from getting damp. Apply it on the receptacle and the end part of the coil. Be sure to use a cotton swab on it and wear gloves. Apply adequate amounts on the area.

Slowly insert the calrod with grease in the receptacle. Secure this tightly. Plug the stove back into the outlet and turn on the circuit breaker. Check to see if it works. If it does not work, get a voltmeter to assess if there is current activity. It helps if you know an electrician who can help you out.

Most of the time, problems will arise if there is improper installation. When testing the burners, sometimes it will not give off heat. When this happens, a leak or loose connection is a possibility. Switch off the stove and locate the problem. If there are bent connections, take them out and straighten them.

Always read the instruction manual for your stoves when installing replacement coils. Bear in mind that safety should always come first. Keep the work area free of water when performing the task. Do not attempt to fix the problem when the stove is on.
