How To Take Better Photographs Using Proper Lighting

by Lacie Sheaman

Photography allows you to express yourself and relax. If you enjoy the challenge of taking good photographs, or even looking at the works of others, you can learn to choose unique vantage points and creative techniques to capture images on "film" like no one has ever seen them. A picture can express thoughts or emotions that words often fail to convey.

Know how you should hold the camera correctly. When you are not holding your camera properly, you may not be getting the stability you need for the perfect photo. Support the camera's lens using your non-dominant hand, and keep your arms as close to your core as possible.

As people, we are always looking for the balance in life. We want things to be centered. Perfection may be the desire of most, but shooting a photograph which is slightly less than perfect, off center, for example, can create an effect that is astounding. Be careful with auto-focus that locks into any object in the lens center. Focus manually, and lock focus just before shooting the picture.

Keep the knowledge of the settings on your camera simple. Master one control at a time, such as the shutter speed or the aperture, before taking on the next. This way, you can concentrate on taking the shot instead of fiddling about with camera settings while your subject walks away.

Employ digital post-processing to make photos appear as pencil sketches, water colors, oil paintings, and more. There are many options for digital editing software, although Adobe Photoshop is considered to be of the highest quality. Often, turning a photo into a work of art is easy; simply apply a filter in the medium of your choice.

Don't miss a shot because you're trying to correct your settings. However, don't use your camera's preset settings, either. These automatic settings might not give you the effect you want, so it's better to choose your camera settings manually. Know your camera well and use the settings that allow you to have the most control over your shots while still allowing you to adjust them in an easy and timely manner.

If you have to adjust to new backdrops or subjects, take lots of practice shots. The more practice shots you take, the more comfortable you will get with the environment. Every situation in photography varies quite a bit. Try taking pictures at different times of the day to get a different lighting.

You can use a lot of different techniques to take good shots. Some ways will work well in the hands of some, while not at all in the hands of others. Hopefully these tips have given you a starting point for your own photos.
