Golf Rules for Beginners: Etiquette & Fundamentals

by Liam Low

Golf is a respected game with rules and manners, and it's important to understand the fundamentals before you go out and play for the first time.

Whether you're playing solo, in a two-some, or with a foursome, you should be aware of the course rules. Sometimes you play "ready golf," meaning whoever's ready to hit can hit, and sometimes you give "honors," meaning that the person with the best score from the previous hole swings first. Regardless, you should always be mindful of the players in front of and behind you.

It is never appropriate to hit when the group ahead of you is still close enough to reach. If you are playing with other players, wait until it's your turn and never swing at the same time as another player. This can be dangerous for the group ahead of you and confusing to your group.

While you wait for your turn, determine which club you'd like to use and decide where you will tee up your ball. Also visualize where your ideal shot will go on the fairway. For beginners, I recommend playing "ready golf" as it keeps the game moving and keeps players interested. Don't rush, just relax and be ready to take a swing.

If you're delaying the group behind you because you're a beginner or playing with beginners, you can always allow other groups to play through. You can wave to them and they'll understand that you're letting them play through your group. This is always an appreciated tactic.

When someone is ready to take a shot, you should avoid standing in their line of sight and you should not make a sound! It's very distracting to be ready to hit and just as start your back swing, someone decides to rummage through their bag or noisily unwrap a piece of candy.

Replacing divots is another fundamental aspect of the game. When you're on the teebox and you take some ground with your swing, cover the exposed ground with the mixture of sand and seed most courses leave nearby. When on the fairway, simply put the chunk of ground back and step it down. And when you're on the green, pull out your handy divot tool and fix the spot where your ball landed.

When you have completed a hole, replace the flag and leave the green so that the next group can play. Count your score and write it on the scorecard when you're back at your cart.

Other, more complex rules can be learned through experience, but with a good understanding of these you should be able to make it through you're round respectfully.
