Collecting Autographs For Fun & Profit
by Larry Oaks
Autograph collecting is a fun and rewarding hobby, but it's also a lucrative business for many entrepreneurs. Casual hobbyists enjoy the thrill of the chase and the fact that their movie, music or sports idols could potentially be signing a piece of memorabilia in their possession. Collectors across the globe are always looking to add the unattainable signature to their collection.
Autographs can be obtained either in person or through the mail. If you live in a city like Los Angeles, where the mighty Lakers and Dodgers rule the sporting scene, and Hollywood just a stone's throw away, autograph hunting can be easily done in person. For everyone else, collecting through the mail may be the most economical approach. Athletes can be written in care of their sports team, celebrities in care of their television show or on location at a film set while musicians can be reached through their agent or a venue at which they are performing.
The value of an autograph depends on who the signature is from. If you don't want to pay for an appraisal, surf the internet for autograph dealers and see if you can find an average cost for the signature. Marketing your business, may it be brick-and-mortar or online is extremely important if your goal is profit and you want to sell your collected autographs to the general public. If you have your own website or even a blog site (yes, blogs aren't just for random rants and raves these days), you can use several marketing tools like affiliate ads or set up an online auction site to draw more business in. If you plan to sell autographs, you will need to be upfront with customers about how the signature was obtained. Your customers must know if you got an autograph through the mail. And if you got the autograph in person, then you cannot sell it without the corresponding Certificate of Authenticity that would include the date and place where you obtained it.
An autograph seeker must always follow certain procedures and rules. Whether in-person or through the mail, always be polite in your request. "Please" and "thank you" are two words you should never fail to mention. Never forget to come prepared when attending autograph shows - you'll need a permanent marker, preferably a Sharpie (tm) and an item that can be easily signed. If you are requesting an autograph by mail, send your request with a SASE, or self-addressed stamped envelope. Never request more than 2 items to be signed at any given time - many celebrities consider this to be rude.
Blank index cards or notebooks are best for general celebrities, drum sticks or guitar magazines and tablature sheets for musicians, while athletes can certainly sign baseballs, footballs and the like. Remember the C word when obtaining an autograph - and that is courtesy.
Present the <a href="http://searchenginepublishing.com/3100/baseball-qa/">fan</a> that you know an awesome <a href="http://www.ultimateteamset.com/Philadelphia-Phillies.html">Philadelphia Phillies</a> team set they will truly flip for.
