Take A Look At An Illusion Magic Evaluation of "The Poor Man's Cups And Balls"

by Charlotte Friedrich

"Poor Man's Cups & Balls" is a packet style card technique that recreates a performance of traditional cups and also balls with what are properly playing cards. The card trick follows the plot of a traditional cups and balls routine - filled with large loads at the end. But what exactly is the purpose?

Here is how the effect looks. You bring out a packet of six cards: three having photos of cups and three with pictures of single balls. You state that you will perform a poor man's version of the classic "cups and balls" effect.

Following a number of turnovers, counts and other moves, the three balls individually "penetrate" with the cups, one at a time (a ball card is put on top of a cup card and the ball card is exposed underneath).

In the next step, all of three balls penetrate the cups all at once and land on a card (there are now three balls printed on one card). On the last step, three big loads - three different kinds of fruits - show up in the cards from within the cup cards.

If you want, the trick comes with alternate ending that has pictures of bunnies. The cards are gimmicked therefore spectators might not notice them. The trick quickly resets so it's prepared to be performed again.

The kit contains the cups and balls cards, extra cards for the alternative ending and written guidelines. The cards are good quality.

The guidelines, however, were only adequate, as the photos can convey more details. For example, when magicians are instructed to turn over the cards, it's nice to find out in which direction. A simple arrow in the images will have helped immensely.

Is It Worthwhile?

One could say that "Poor Man's Cups & Balls" enables you to perform a cups and balls style routine without the need for a table. However, the card routine requires a table as you have to lay cards down.

Furthermore, because you need to get cards, it is best to perform this on a close-up pad and not a smooth table surface.

Given all of the considerations, I simply don't find "Poor Man's Cups & Balls" to be really worth the effort. Instead, I will stick to my real cups and balls routine.
