Bumbo Seat Recalled, a great replacement seat
by Simone Mastro
The Bumbo Baby seat has been recalled for the second time because of danger to babies falling out or tipping over and suffering brain injuries. Though the Bumbo is probably the best known seat it is certainly not the best, lacking safety and entertainment features that Summer Infant 3 Stage Baby Seat offers.
The Summer Infant is more stable and less likely to tip, helping parents rest a bit easier. It has a belt which secures the child in the seat, It also straps to a chair both underneath as well as the back which gives a lot of support. This is not possible with the Bumbo because it doesn't have any straps which is one of the things the company highlights is that it's strapless which may be good for some kids who don't like to be constrained.
The dimensions of the Summer Infant tend to be much more ideal for security though a little harder to transport. The dimensions for the Bumbo are 14.5 inches by 14.5 inches wide x 9.5 inches high when compared to the Summer Infant that has a much wider base at 16.5 inches wide by 16.5 inches by 9.5 inches high. The extra width on the bottom part will make the product a great deal sturdier along with the Bumbo with a weight of merely 3.3 lbs as the Summer Infant is 5.5 pounds it will make the item considerably better to avoid falling.
According to the Consumer Protection Safety Commission there was a voluntary recall connected with Bumbo seats in 2007 due to a claimed twenty-eight falls from a higher area, 3 of which ended up being skull fractures. That's since went up to forty six prior to the recall with fourteen skull fractures, 2 concussions as well as a fractured limb. Bumbo International has since put in a warning advising people never to use on top of elevated surfaces.
Since the Bumbo recall 45 accidents have occurred with 17 skull fractures for infants ages 3 to 10 months old falling from elevated surfaces.
There have been an additional 50 incidents where the infants wiggle their way out while being either on the floor or an unknown elevation. These have resulted in two skull fractures and one concussion. I have used the Bumbo and seen my child go from sitting in it at a few months old, to barely containing him at 5 months. We no longer use it at 6 months old because it is more work trying to keep him in, but we now use the Summer Infants which keeps him very secure.
Bumbo: The Bumbo in fact just has a single use and that's to use on the floor. It does feature an attachment tray for $11.00 which connects and it can be a spot to put toys even though there is nothing at all keeping them attached.
The 3 Stage Super Seat offers far more by using a seat belt which will keep them safer. Furthermore, it has good baby toys to help keep them interested. We use them in his baby crib due to the fact he likes them a lot. Among the finest things about toys is they are actually attached and secure. The baby can play for a long time while you do not need to keep running over to pick them up.
The seat is great for dining out so you don't have to put them in the high chairs which other kids sat in, put their mouth on, and you're not sure if it was cleaned or not. The Summer Infant is very strong and doesn't slide off the chair. I was able to buckle it, and lift the entire chair by grasping the actual seat. You also save money from purchasing one of the highchair covers which actually are simply a fluffy cushioning not to mention don't offer much support to their back.
By 3 months old to toddler age this seat will be worthy of keeping. As the child grows you are able to take off the toys, and also the soft insert for a bigger booster seat, but the Bumbo by this time is long past it's usage date.
