Means of Using the Montessori Language Materials When Teaching Children
by Chloe Gib
Montessori language materials have been used for more than a hundred years so far. Many schools around the world are currently using these techniques successfully. The technique harnesses the learning in children by focusing on their senses.
The founder of these teaching methods is of the opinion that the little ones are a lot more able to learn new things. The reason being they are in a sensitive period in their life. And therefore to prepare them, the use of sandpaper letters is introduced to them.
Montessori sensorial materials are a common tool used. One of which is the sandpaper letters. The models built lead the children to know more about phonetics. The various letters of the alphabet could be mounted on card boards. From here, the vowels and the consonants could be separated by the use of different colors. Blue is usually for the vowels and red for the consonants. After this, the teachers could trace them with their fingers while sounding them for the children to repeat.
Once this stage is accomplished, learners could then be led to make combinations of the letters to form words. The words should be made of about two to three letters. After repeatedly sounding them, they can now graduate to writing them down.
Once they have mastered this, then they will need to be taught how to sound words incorporated with consonants. The less difficult ones to sound could be started with as progress to the more difficult ones is made. Phonograms could then be taught. While doing all this, the instructor should use movable letters in separate cardboards. When they learn to read from them, reading from books will come easy for them.
The use of grammar symbols could be started to help them learn how to construct sentences. They are known to aide in learning about various things such as verbs, nouns and even how to use punctuations. An example of how to do this is to mark the nouns using a black triangle and verbs by using huge red circles.
The use of verbal communication is witnessed across the Montessori curriculum. Use of vocabulary is given an emphasis in whatever activities they cover. Definition and nomenclature is also used as a tool of learning new things.
Using the Montessori language materials is quite beneficial to the learners. Development of social skills among the learners is achieved remarkably well. They can also be able to communicate with each other at a tender age as compared to the children learning using the other methods.
