Model Railroad Tracks

by Bill Andrew

If like so many others, you also feel a bit overwhelmed by the sheer amount of model railroad track plans available, then I'm here to tell you that it's time for you to relax, because this is essentially where everything begins falling into place.

You have probably already researched the various scales of model trains and have an approximation of the space available for this endeavor - if so, you are well on your way. In this process you have also viewed dozens if not hundreds of different train locomotives and rolling stock. Are you someone who favors the look of yesteryear; the engineer in your minds eye resembles Casey Jones? Is state-of-the-art more to your liking; this engineer is a pointy-haired Anime?

If you find that you're stuck between two different types of design, then you'll need to try and clarify your wishes before making a final choice. For example, try to close your eyes and imagine how your train will look as its speeds through one of your towns. If you have a modern day setting, then an old Wild West style of train is bound to look out of place.

You'll also need to reach a personal agreement in terms of the scale of your model train and the relevant layout. In other words, don't waste your time fantasizing about HO scale buildings when deep down in your heart you long for a Z scale train. I can assure you, the two will not look good together.

The scale of your model train will also play an important role in determining how high your layouts should be. Bear in mind that if the average height of your layout is 36 inches, then you'll tend to have to a wonderful overall view of your railroad and trains. If on the other hand you're average layout height is 52 inches, then you'll notice that it provides you with a better view of your train's detail.

You also need to consider the amount of time you put into constructing your layout. For example, do you only want a basic theme consisting of some forests, a lake or two, and perhaps a few deer and cows? Essentially, this style of layout is considered ideal for beginners, simply because it's quick and easy to assemble, and of course it requires less money than a complicated layout. Bear in mind that you can always expand it in future by adding one or two hills and perhaps a small cabin.

On the other hand, if you have loads of cash to play with and you've got plenty of time on your hands, the world is your oyster, in that you really are only limited by your own imagination. In that case, you can go ahead and begin designing a landscape that will be the envy of your model train community. Skyscrapers, draw-bridges, city parks, rivers, and even complex train depots are all things you can include.

One of the best things about model railroad track plans is that there is certainly no shortage, irrespective of your skill level. Additionally, there are literally thousands of books available which cover every imaginable topic regarding model trains and model train track designs. As is to be expected, you can even get various software applications which can help you achieve your goals.

Hobby shops across the country are of course another phenomenal resource which you have at your disposal. If you really want to go all the way then you should also consider locating and joining a model train club, and I'd be most surprised if you weren't able to find one close to where you live.

As you can see now, all the pieces start falling into place at this stage. Let's face it; it's easy to see why so many people immerse themselves in what can only be described as an incredible hobby. Go ahead and have fun!
