Reprehensibly Awful Acting Tips Brought to Light

by Anne Davenport Rosario

How many acting tips have you come across? Trying to recall all of them would be a daunting task. Many websites, businesses and actors offer advice on acting. A major problem is what advice do you trust? This article will demonstrate some bad acting tips you may have heard. Aspiring actors would do well to avoid this poor advice.

When you first get going in acting, it is tricky to know who to listen too. You can locate reputable acting resources. My own personal acting journey has shown me which acting coaches offer good information. Actress and acting teacher Stella Adler is an example of a good acting resource. I've been acting for ten years and I can show you some of the bad acting tips.

Have you encountered acting tips regarding dialogue memorization? Attempting to recall every word in the script is a mistake. You should focus on why the character is speaking the lines. What are the characters goals? How does he feel when he is speaking? How does he influenced by the other characters? The last thing the director and casting people are searching for is the ability to recall dialogue. You should try to adhere to the script, but remember the motivation and goals of the character are paramount to speaking the exact words. What is important is how well you can act. How well you recall the script word for word is not important. Sanford Meisner once said "An ounce of behavior is worth a pound of words." The meaning is clear, that the emoting and behavior of your character is far more important than what is being said.

Tips about your reactions are often poor advice. Of course you want to be affected by the other characters, but you don't want to rehearse your reactions. Faked facial expressions look fake to the audience. When you hear someone in the industry say an actor is "chewing the scenery", this is what they mean. William Shatner is the original Star Trek is often cited as an over actor. Acting theory says you should employ techniques like sense memory accurately portray the emotions of you character. You will react without planning ahead using this technique. Do not plan out your body language. Janeane Garofalo, speaking about over acting, said "Or Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York. Yes, that was Daniel Day-Lewis, so he could get away with it. When you've had left foot issues in Ireland, you get street cred in Five Points."

The above are examples of poor acting tips. However there are worthwhile acting materials out there for you. ActingScenes.com is one example of a good acting website. There are free scenes you can download and perform, either for practice, class work or perhaps even duet acting competitions. You can request your copy of a free method acting guide. The PDF offers routines that you can perform, like the breakfast drink exercise.
