View The World Differently With Blacklight Paintings

by Chloe Gib

Various materials are used to make art; one such form is blacklight paintings which uses a unique form of ink that is visible or fluoresces in the presence of ultraviolet radiation. This type of paint may or may not be visible under normal light conditions.

Black light paints may either be invisible or fluorescent. In some case the paints are mixed with normally pigmented shades to brighten their appearance in daylight. What may appear to be a blank page in white light, or under normal light conditions, could be revealed as an intricate design in the presence of black light. The fluorescent version can be seen as bright colors in normal light conditions and give of visible light or glow under ultraviolet radiation or blacklight conditions.

In 1934, Robert Switzer and his brother, who was a chemistry major, invented the first blacklight paint when the former was confined to a dark room whilst recovering from a fall. Robert and his brother used a black light to locate fluorescent materials in their father's storeroom which they then mixed with varnish and paints.

The art world has used these unique properties to incorporate into their paintings. The resulting effects are vivid and psychedelic. The canvas for the artwork can be the human body, material and even entire walls. The artwork could either incorporate the invisible nature of the ink and regular paints, thereby making some parts of the painting only appear under UV radiation.

Other uses, besides in the art world, are the use of the inks in security features. The items that use such features consist of money notes, certain certificates that are printed on paper, tickets and other such things that have some kind of value. The inks used in these circumstances are usually invisible in the white light range and glow when exposed to a blacklight source. This prevents attempts at inexpensive and simple counterfeiting of scanning and reprinting.

Some cars have control panels which use this type of ink and a source to make them visible to the driver at night without impairing their night vision. Sceneries in theme parks are also sometimes painted with black light paints to enhance the effect of being in a fantasy world.

It is clear from these many uses that blacklight ink has many uses besides just being used in artwork and paintings Within the art world though it has provided a whole new niche for artists to work in.
