Learn More About The Chatty Cathy Doll

by Nichole Cunningham

The <A href="http://www.mattelchattyhaven.com">Chatty Cathy doll</A> was manufactured by a toy company called Mattel between 1959 and 1965 and at the beginning of 1960 they started retailing in stores and appearing in TV commercials. To begin with the doll spoke a total of eleven phrases each randomly when a chatty ring at the back was pulled. The other end of the string was a connected to a phonograph record located in the abdomen of the doll.

You had to pull the string which wound a metal coil and this is how the record was driven. The first dolls to be released in 1960 came with 11 phrases and later in 1963 the manufacturer added seen more phrases to the repertoire which made them total up to eighteen phrases. The head of development and research at Mattel Toy Company Jack Ryan is the person that designed the voice unit.

The dolls came with blue eyes and blonde hair to begin with. Then in 1962 came the introduction of the brunette hair version which was followed by auburn version the following year. It is also about the same time that the brown skinned African American doll was introduced. By 1960 only two outfits were available. One came with white socks, panties, crinoline, blue shoes and a blue dress with white eyelet. The other came with a white voile overskirt, red shoes, velvet head band, white socks and a red sunsuit with red pinafore. The accompanying accessories were a comic book and a story book, a shoehorn and sometimes even a paper wrist tag that also served as a warranty card.

After being on the market for a total of 6 years, these were 2nd most popular dolls of the 60s second to Barbie dolls. This success resulted to the manufacture of more dolls by the same company and these new dolls included tiny brother, baby and tiny baby, singin and charmin chattys. Among these were the dolls that were later redesigned and reissued by this company making their appearance totally different from those that were made before and their characteristic voice was also changed.

Also different in terms on appearance was the Patty dolls that were introduced in the year 1984. Special edition Cathy dolls were first released in 1998 and later on in 2001. The appearance of these dolls was similar to those made in 1960 and could only be found in specialty stores.

After the mother company bought a Canadian toy maker in 1962, a Canadian version of these dolls was released. Notably what was different about these dolls was the materials used to make them though the original American mold was maintained. The difference in material is the reason why collectors value the Canadian version at higher price than the rest.

The difference between the Canadian and US culture is what led to different phrases. These differences were advantageous because they enabled the dolls to be sold to other English speaking countries. The producing company purchased an additional company from England in 1966 which led to the production of British dolls in the 70s. They were made from completely different molds and had no resemblance to the North American dolls.

All talking dolls used the same pull string mechanisms in the 60s and 70s. There are other toys that used this mechanism but were not made by the same company as these dolls. The dolls were so popular that they even acted as sources of inspiration for some TV shows like the twilight zone.
