Clear proof about who invented chess remains uncertain. The evidence available leaves the question under dispute. Scholars who have investigated written and archaeological evidence point to Indian, Persian and Chinese roots. It is clear that each area has an important link to early examples of this competitive pastime.
Shuo Yuan, a text from the second century BC has mention of XiangQi. Shuo Yuan originates from the Warring State period that extended to 225 BC. XiangQi simulates battles between 2 sides. It was also in the Warring period that Sun Tzu wrote his classic The Art of War. And, in this time the Qin dynasty was established. This first Chinese empire was begun in 221 BC. The famous terracotta soldiers guard the tomb of its founder.
If chess is seen as a military strategy game than it is logical to assume this era and the game introduced in this period is the origin of this game. However, western scholars assume its origins date to a much later period in India. They attribute its source to be Chaturanga developed around or before the 6th century A. D during the Gupta Empire.
In the following century, it was adopted as shatranjin in Persia. This form introduced to Europe during the late medieval era according to western historians. A book from the period of Sassanid King Chosroe I describes in some detail the pieces and terminology. This King presided over a golden period. He ruled from 531 to 579 AD.
The first literary mention of the origin was in a Persian poem which stated India as the venue. But, this may only be how the Persians were introduced. The real location could be entirely different.
Consider the fact that Xian was the origination of the trading route that stretched from China to Europe and went by India and the Mediterranean. This may have been how the introduction was made from China to other areas. Xian is an ancient capital and the location of several empires in early period of a united China. Some of the most significant Chinese dynasties were based here. From this link the Art of War, XiangQi and western chess are connected.
However, the important role of the Queen, a factor attributed to the playing of the game in Spain has changed the nature of western chess. Professor David Li goes so far as to say the game should now be called QueenQi. The game is said to have arrived in Spain after the Arabs established a presence in the country. But, the change in the game is attributed to the period to Queen Isabella under whose rule the Arabs were pushed out and the country began to establish its own empire.
