Is SWTOR the WOW Slayer Everybody Expected?
by Adam Morgan
The Star Wars universe is beloved by many, and the new game Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) takes place in its expansive universe. There is so much beauty in this game, as it takes its cues from several games, such as Mass Effect, for the color scheme and style. You will truly feel as if you've stepped through a portal into the Star Wars universe as as soon as you've logged into the game.
SWTOR is the one of the newest MMORPGs (massively-multiplayer online role-playing games) to grace the PC and it is incredible to say the least. Moving completely away from the general MMO genre, Star Wars: The Old Republic treads new ground by incorporating a massive, choice-based story line into the game.
In WOW and most other MMOs, players get the same situations over and over and there is really nothing to differentiate the experience that players have. In contrast, The Old Republic allows each player to truly experience a different game and story, unique to them alone.
You will also no longer need to pay a $15 monthly subscription fee as SWTOR is going Free to Play. You will still be able to play with your friends and act out your Star Wars universe fantasies while saving on the monthly subscription fee. You'll get quite a substantial amount of game play for free, as it will last until you reach Level 50. For only $15 you get the game along with a free month of premium access, for even bigger savings.
The game is constantly updated with new content and fixes. To show you what I mean, Cartel Coins are about to be introduced. These Coins will let you unlock game items and get new features.
SWTOR was released in December 2011, which means its still new and fresh, but has matured sufficiently. The best part about that is the annoying people and bugs are now long gone, so you can enjoy the game with other like-minded people. Those players who have stuck around are true fans, who love the game and encourage newcomers to join in the fun.
The universe inside The Old Republic is immense, as proven by the dozens of planets for you to explore and the space combat mini games. The mini games aren't as fun as they should have been. There is still lots to like about the game, despite that minor downside.
You get to choose from 8 different character classes. You can choose to fight for the Republic or the Empire. If you ever wanted to be a Jedi or a Sith and dance around with a lightsaber, slashing creatures left and right then this is most definitely the game for you. Once you reach Level 10, you will be able to specialize into one of 16 advanced classes. The choice of advanced class you get depends on what your original character class selection was.
Depending on if you start a new game as the Empire or the Republic you will start on a different planet with a different set of powers and abilities. Whichever side you choose you will have a blast exploring this massive and dangerous world. You will never look at MMOs the same way ever again after you have played a few hours of Star Wars: The Old Republic.
