Sony PS3: Is It An Excellent Gaming Console Or Not?
by Rasphald Belownski
The PlayStation 3 is the 3rd video game console created by Sony Computer Entertainment as part of the PlayStation series. It is part of the seventh generation of video game consoles together with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii. It was released last 2006 and has since become very popular among avid gamers.
The PlayStation 3 is very powerful entertainment machine. It is not anymore merely a gaming console, it could also handle high definition movies and digital TV, store photos as well as music, and even enable their users to surf the Web. The The PS3 is considered by many as the most powerful gaming console today because its CPU that is composed of one 3.2 GHz Power Processing Element or PPE and eight Synergistic Processing Elements or SPEs. Because of its multiple core architecture, the system can designate each core to a certain task.
This allows efficient multitasking capability, and better gaming experience. It also includes a dedicated graphics processing unit which can produce resolutions up to 1080p HD. Unlike other gaming consoles, the PS3 can accommodate Blu-ray discs, and is probably one reason why many people seem to prefer this sort of console. Increasing the appeal of the PS3 are the gaming titles that are only playable on the said unit such as Gran Turismo and Final Fantasy. Also, the PlayStation community is provided with an excellent amount of third party support, meaning, you can come across more games and add-ons for the PS3 than the other video game consoles.
You must know though that the PS3 is not perfect. One issue which makes buyers think twice about getting a PS3 is the price - the cheapest model will cost you $249 in most retail stores. When it was first launched, it was also the heaviest and biggest among the three gaming systems from the same generation. Sony has launched a PS3 slim to deal with this problem though, but that also led to giving up some features, most notably, the capability to run third party OS. The much mentioned PS3 YLOD, short for Yellow Light of Death, is also another reason why consumers are hesitant about getting this system.
Fundamentally what happens is that some of those who own the original PS3 come across a fault indicator - a yellow flashing light, which shows up because of a non-specific hardware failure that makes the machine unplayable . The Yellow light on ps3 is not as prevalent in the newer models though, and many of those who own the older models have managed to resolve the problem by sending their units back to Sony for repairs. Some PS3 owners, specifically those whose machines are no longer within warranty, even did the repair themselves successfully.
The Sony PlayStation 3 is considered by many as the most powerful gaming console today, and rightfully so because it has a multicore CPU architecture, and multimedia capabilities. Visit here to know more about PlayStation 3.
