What You Should Know About A Stuffed Bear
by Jill Faulkner
The stuffed bear, also referred to by many as the teddy bear, is something that occupies a really unique space within the American culture. Cuddly stuffed toys are among the most popularly bought off shelves since they are considered comfort toys by very young children. Other than that, they have the tendency to bring nostalgic childhood memories for a lot of adults.
The name teddy bear is known to have originated from the former US President, Theodore Roosevelt. This started when he adamantly refused shooting a bear for a photo shot during a hunting expedition which was arranged for him. After the story surfaced publicly, Morris Michtom then started to market his handmade toys, which he originally called Teddys Bear. This was then shortened and found to be perfect for the lovable toys.
Today, most of these toys are marketed exclusively for children. In compliance to government regulations, manufacturers are mandated to ensure that their toys have securely fastened eyes, arms and legs attached with the use of special safety joints. Bears made to wear outfits should also be in compliance to the standards imposed for appropriate clothing. Although these toys are usually machine washable, care instructions should still be read through for assurance.
It is not unlikely to meet some teddy lovers with the desire to experience making their own toys. Most will consider joining workshops that will allow toy customization. Many of these can be found in birthday parties. Workshops will usually leave the choice of clothing and accessories to children. With additional cost, sound effects can even be added.
Because these toys are universally associated with bright childhood memories, finding adults that purchase stuffed bears for their own use is not surprising at all. Adult collectors are referred to as Arctophiles. The term is a combination of the words, Arcto and Philos, which are the Greek terms for bears and love respectively.
An adult interested in keeping a collection of these toys, however, will often opt getting the custom-made collectibles. These usually feature intricate detailing and hand stitching. They are found at high end specialty boutiques or at craft shows, unlike the typical toys displayed on store shelves. Collectibles have not been made following safety rules so they should be kept far from small children.
Among the most unique collectibles available in the market are soy dipped bears. Originally, they are simple toys, with some even coming from thrift stores. However, crafters have these dipped into candle wax, often scented, making them decorative display objects. Scents usually last for several months, making them fresheners that are beautiful and functional as well.
Cleaning these toys is not entirely complicated. Custom-made ones may be purchased with cleaners provided during the workshops. Those gotten from stores, though, will do well with washing using laundry detergent and water. It is recommended that washing is done at least monthly or when it is necessary.
After cleaning, the stuffed bear has to be left to thoroughly dry. It can be left somewhere waterproof or can be hung to dry under sunlight. There are also some people who will choose to dry the toys using dryers or blowers. Once dry, they can be brushed so they will regain their fluffiness.
