Draw Faces Realistically -- 4 Tips You Want to Know

Have you ever observed somebody who is really excellent in creating a drawing? Especially if she or he is drawing a portrait of somebody's face? When an artist who has genuine talent draws faces realistically, he makes it look so natural and virtually trouble-free.

But that is just how it looks at first glance. Most portrait artists use a structured way to draw faces detail by detail. There's a good deal happening behind that pencil that you and I, as viewers, are not even aware of. And it's really not just spontaneous inspiration. It's training and practice that makes it appear so simple and easy.

Therefore even though drawing facial looks realistically usually takes some skill, it's mostly based on educational instruction and I would prefer to reveal some of that instructions with you. Continue reading the "techniques" of the way to draw faces detail by detail.

Tip 1

Determine which shape best shows the face. Is it a circle, triangle, rectangle, oval, or square? Make the outline of the actual face and hairline with this in mind. Next, either imagine in your thoughts or draw on the paper, two guidelines, one straight down the center, and one directly across the midsection, producing four equal parts of the face. This will help you maintain the proportions of the facial area.

Tip 2

Unless you know how to follow a step-by-step structure to sketch faces this is usually the part where a lot of people will get completely lost. Even if it appears incorrect to you in the beginning, the eye area must be positioned on the center, horizontal guide line.

Then, make a light sketch of the actual nose directly in the center between the eyes, about half-way down from the middle horizontal line, making an imaginary upside down triangle between the eyes and nose.

Make a short, straight horizontal line underneath the nose area, halfway down, for the mouth. Then put the ears, making the top of the ear line up together with the eye balls. So far, you are just having a very light outline sketch.

Tip 3

At this point you can begin adding some detail to the mouth and eyes, eye lids, eyebrows, as well as lips. It's always best to be working from a picture as the model when you are a novice.

Tip 4

The more you practice, the more your sketches will begin to look increasingly more like the face you're sketching. Therefore once you get these basic facial features down, it's going to be time to focus on adding some hair, and creating a three dimensional portrait through shading and light and dark.

Don't be discouraged if the first attempt at sketching a face realistically falls short. Actually, it will not look much like anyone in any way. Just keep working at it and you'll surely establish the abilities eventually.
