Solving The Dilemma On Buying Paintings

by Gelenia Cally

Should they buy a painting or not? That is a question that is often faced by many art lovers. They have to take three things into account. If you are in the business of selling paintings and you actually even own a gallery where you store them, then you must have been asked the to-buy-or-not-to-buy question countless times. At the end of the day, you will realize that your proficiency in handling these types of queries would reflect on your sales or profits.

Buying paintings tends to awaken the deep thinking personality of most art lovers. A little eccentricity is also common among them. Their decision on whether to buy or not is not solely based on how the paintings look. The aesthetics matter a great deal, of course - but paintings are not just bought on the basis of their aesthetics alone. Without any further ado, we will now venture to look at the three things that matter to art buyers - beyond the aesthetics - when it comes to buying paintings.

Firstly, before making decisions on whether to buy paintings, art lovers endeavor to know who the real artists behind the paintings are. Many artists have become well-known for the quality of their work and their names alone would convince art lovers to buy their paintings. Some artists have been so established that the mere fact that they created a painting would be enough to convince the art lovers to make the purchase. They wouldn't even bother looking at the painting. Paintings and works of art are considered to be an extension of the artist, after all, so it is important for many people to know who was the creative genius behind such creations. It is akin to having an interest on the artists behind a song we like listening to. We sometimes look past the melody and the lyrics, and take note of the genius behind the songs.

It is also often the case that art lovers are curious to know about the inspiration behind the paintings created by the artists. You have to keep it in mind that the most attractive paintings tend to be quite enigmatic. It is not always easy to tell what the inspirations behind them are. But you will find yourself having a greater appreciation for art as a whole if you have an idea what the inspiration behind it is. The inspiration behind the paintings alone would be enough to convince many art lovers to purchase them, regardless of the actual quality of the painting.

Paintings convey messages, and these messages are also considered by many art lovers when they are wondering whether to buy paintings or not. Abstract paintings carry messages, too, albeit in a discreet manner. Art lovers endeavor to know those messages, and we have situations where the sellers of paintings have to make up stories and peddle them as the 'messages' behind the paintings they sell, so as to sate prospective buyer's curiosities. That is not necessarily a bad thing, keeping it in mind that some artists simply create paintings, and leave it upon their audiences to figure out the messages in them, without giving any other clues.
