How To Select the Best Baby Cradles

by Cheryl James

A baby cradle is a great option for parents and caregivers of newborn babies. Cradles fit wonderfully in places with limited space because they are smaller than cribs. For convenience and piece of mind, during the first few months of a baby's life many parents prefer to have their child in their room. Baby cradles are perfect for this type of situation. There are a variety of baby cradle styles to choose from so that anyone can find a design to fit their specific needs and wants.

It is always important to keep safety in mind when deciding on a baby cradle. Some people keep baby cradles as a cherished family heirloom, in hopes that it can be passed down for generations. However, over time the safety guidelines have changed tremendously. It is vital that parents and caregivers look into up to date safety guidelines before using a used or antique cradle. It is also extremely important to check that all bolts and screws are tight prior to using a new or used cradle.

A bassinet cradle is often a popular type of baby cradle. These cradles are usually constructed from a metal frame and fabric lining. This eliminates the need for parents or caregivers to purchase additional cradle bedding. A cradle bassinet is generally equipped with a canopy on the top and storage space underneath. With wheels attached to the bottom, bassinet cradles are easily transported from room to room when necessary. Most bassinet cradles also have a convertible feature that allows the bassinet part to be removed from the cradle base to be used as more of a traditional bassinet.

Wooden cradles are also another popular option. These cradles add a traditional and vintage feel and typically rock either at the base or the bed. They are also generally equipped with an anti-rocking feature so that the cradle can be stationary when needed and some may also come on wheels. Many times a parent or caregiver will need to purchase bedding separately for a wooden cradle, which can provide parents with a larger selection than cradles that are made with the bedding included.

A co-sleeper cradle has also become a popular choice in baby cradles. Equipped with an adjustable height, these cradles are made to fit snugly against a parents bed. Waking up to tend to a baby during the night can be made easier with this feature. When the cradle is not against the parents bed it can be used as a traditional cradle. Co-sleeper cradles tend to also have additional storage space underneath for diapers, wipes, and other baby essentials.

Regardless of the type, a baby cradle is an excellent for a newborn to sleep safely when arriving home from the hospital. The cradle will provide the baby with a warm and cozy environment that is needed. A baby can generally use a cradle until they are able to roll over or until the reach the weight limit of 20 - 30lbs, depending on the cradle.
