A beauty pageant is the name given to a contest in which participants, who are as old as 18 years, are judged on their beauty and talents. The key categories used in competition: theme wear, decade wear, interview, talent, swim wear, outfit of choice, sportswear, casual wear, evening wear. This competition may be considered glitz or natural. The glitz pageant permits contestants to use beauty-enhancing accessories, such as elaborate makeup and hairstyles.

The idea behind these pageants is not new. In fact, it has been around in the United States for many decade. The 1960s saw the introduction of the Little Miss America contest, which originated in the state of New Jersey. It was supposed to be for children ages 13 to 17, but in 1964, following a large increase in participants, age divisions were made in the year 1964.

The pageants are becoming more and more popular in the modern world. In fact, this business is very lucrative. It is estimated that is takes in billions of dollars annuals. The parents of competitors fork out thousands of dollars for lessons, clothing and accessories, and other necessary services involved with competition.

Most of these contests cater to the female sex. However, a growing number of males have become involved as well. The age groups for contestants are typically: zero to 11 months, 12 to 23 months, 2 to 3 years, 4 to 6 years, 7 to 9 years, 10 to 12 years, 13 to 15 years, and 16 to 18 years. These divisions may be known by special names, such as Baby, Petite, or Little Misses.

Typically, contestants do not compete for more than two hours. In fact, a lot of the competitions put a restriction on the amount of time that a participant can be on stage, typically less than a couple minutes per kid. This rule may also apply to talent portions of a competition. People should know all the rules related to stage time so that they can follow them and do not get disqualified or lose points. Babies and young children may be accompanied by their parents while on stage.

In glitz, young contestants wear costumes, makeup, fake nails, big hair and spray tans. They also do intricate routines on stage. An assortment of prizes and titles are awarded when all is said and done. People involved should know and abide by all of the rules for a competition.
