Tips On Catfishing Baits

by Diane Spencer

Catfish typically live in freshwater but there are still some that live in saltwater. Catfish are known for their barbell which is javelin-like and can be found near their jaws. Similar to the whiskers of the cat, this barbell is used by the catfish to increase their perception of the environment and to screen their surroundings. But unlike the cat's whiskers, the barbell of the catfish has additional feature. The barbell, which has taste glands, helps the catfish to catch fish especially in dark waters when their visibility function is reduced.

Catfish are easy to catch because aside from being omnivorous, they are also scavengers meaning there are a variety of baits that can be used to catch them. but for people wanting catch catfishes that are large sizes, proper baits and proper techniques in using them must be done. The following are tips and techniques on how to appropriately use ctafishing baits:

-Find the right location to do your catfishing and use your bait. This is important because not being able to find the right location to throw your bait will just be a waste of time even if you use the best catfishing bait. Usually, catfish likes to stay in places where there is a bend that normally has an overhang because this gives them some kind of protection. Aside from that, you can also try to observe the water for some minor movements and throw your bait into that spot and check what happens. Also, it is important to keep in mind to keep your bait in place and as much as possible with little to no movements.

-It is also important to know that catfishes normally don't feed when the sun is up. Therefore you must remember to go catfishing either during early mornings or in the evening to increase your chances of catching a good number of catfishes.

-It is also important to consider the size of the hook when catfishing. There are two ways that you can find out what size is appropriate for you to use when catfishing. One way is to ask the local catfishers about the size of hook they typically use and the other method is by observing the catfishes' reaction towards your hook. For the second method, it is important to know that if the hook is too big for the catfish, tendency is that they are unable to swallow it and just ends up biting around the bait. If that's the case, you can choose to use a smaller size hook and see what happens.

Now what are the most commonly used catfishing bait?

-Chicken liver. Because of its meaty smell, this is one of the commonly used catfishing baits.

-Because of its ability to stay on the hook despite heavy water currents, shrimp is also a good option to be used as catfishing bait.

-Worms. Regardless of what type of worms you use as catfishing bait, this is a good choice to use especially during winter and spring months.

As stated earlier, catfishes are scavengers and omnivorous making them easy to catch using a variety of baits. Among the catfishing baits that you can use are bread dough, plastic worms, hotdog, sausages and others. Regardless of what type of catfishing bait you will use, just remember to do your catfishing on the proper time and in the appropriate spot to be sure that you will be able to catch sufficient number of catfishes.
