Native Woodland Plants Add Natural Charm To A Garden

by Gene Bush

Plants that are native to the woodlands of North America are well known for their rustic, natural appeal. Additionally, consumers never need to worry about such plants overcrowding or threatening other botanicals. Those looking for the ideal native woodland plants will discover there are many variations from which to choose. Below are some popular favorites in this category:

Trinity lilies, also referred to as wood lilies, are small perennials that grow in various woods of North America. They may reach heights of eight inches, and their leaves are broad with generous, white blooms. The latter feature various shades depending on the season, transitioning from white, to pink, and eventually to deep burgundy in the fall.

Leatherwood is a perennial shrub that grows throughout the eastern North American woods from Canada to Florida's northern tip. Such shrubs usually grow to a height and width of four feet by four feet. Leatherwood shrubs have strong stems and light green leaves that eventually transition to a deep gold color in the fall.

Indian pink is a woodland perennial wildflower that thrives in the southern United States, from Indiana to eastern Texas. It is also referred to as worm grass or woodland pinkroot and grows approximately 12 inches tall under normal conditions. Indian pink botanicals feature tall stems on which unique, star-shaped yellow or burgundy flowers bloom.

Another beautiful selection is the white dogtooth's violet. This botanical is called by various names, including white trout lily and adder tongue. These herbaceous perennials grow in many different wooded areas from East Texas to the southern half of Ontario. They flower in late April, thrive well in the shade, and grow to be one foot tall.

Native woodland plants are the perfect choice for homeowners who wants to add a rustic, natural touch to their garden. They are available at local nurseries, or one can shop for bulbs online. No matter which type of botanical one finds appealing, most consumers are pleased with the quaint beauty they add to a property.
