The Basics On An Art Gallery

by Margaret Gonzalez

The facility or space that is used for displaying art, often visual art pieces, is known as an art gallery or museum. These places may be public or private. Often paintings are put on display. However, sculpture, watercolors, photographs, textiles, furniture, pastels, prints, decorative arts, books and installation art may be displayed. The spaces are also used for poetry reading, performance art and music concerts.

Usually these places host exhibits or exhibitions, which can be traveling or temporary. In either case, they often feature work that has been borrowed from other spaces. Public galleries, which are considered non-profits and are owned by the public, usually showcase collections that have been specially curated. Private galleries are more commercial enterprises and typically have the art available for purchase.

It is common for these places to hold events to celebrate a new exhibit. Many times the artist of the work is present and the different pieces are available for purchase. Collections may be permanent or temporary. The temporary runs usually last for months at a time.

Services that are available to clients of a gallery will vary from place to place. Some common services that are offered through these spaces: appraisals, framing for purchased art, consignments or sales from collectors and estates, private presentations, art market reports, and artist arrangements. People who would like to buy from a gallery or display work in a space should be in touch with the gallery and find out what services they have available.

Some of these spaces are reserved for specific forms or styles of art. However, most galleries accept art from different types of artists, both international and national. Furthermore, the people who work here are usually very knowledgeable in the art world. Advisors are usually available to work closely with clients who are experienced and novice collectors. These professionals can aid in finding the best pieces for the aesthetic needs of their client.

These venues tend to attract the creative population. Public galleries usually put together events that are open to the public and people in the community are urged to participate. Private galleries can be more exclusive with gatherings but also serve as a space for people involved or interested in the art world. Art galleries are located all around the world.

An art gallery is a facility, private or public, that displays artwork. This is mostly visual art and paintings but can also include textiles, costumes, photographs, furniture, sculptures and more. Usually the facilities put together events to launch exhibits, and may regularly have performance art, poetry readings and live music. Creative individuals who are interested in these places should research and visit the galleries near them.
