Customizing BJD Eyes And The Rest

by Celina Heath

Ball jointed dolls are those with ball and socket joints. These things are known throughout the whole world for their particular design and certain prominent features. It is a modern doll with numerous encompassed parts like BJD eyes among others. The Asian varieties of these things are known by the acronym ABJD.

It is normally cast in polyurethane synthetic resin. The different parts are generally strung together with the use of a thick elastic. These products are primarily produced in countries such as Japan, China and South Korea. The style and design has been influenced by anime while kept realistic at the same time.

The sizes range from sixty centimeters or twenty four inches to forty centimeters or sixteen inches. It can even go all the way down to ten centimeters or four inches. The first size refers to the bigger versions and they slowly go down in size. These items are intended for adult collectors.

Another intended feature is the fact that they are easily customizable. They can be painted with little to no negative consequences to it or any features being messed up. The eyes and the hair can also be switched up, depending on the taste of the owner. Clothing is also another remarkably simple aspect to change.

The nearly limitless modification process extends to the other parts as well. The hands, the feet and the head are not exempted in the least. The end result may be extremely different compared to how it originally looked upon its acquisition. There is more than one way for owners to change things up.

Some may even go far and re shape it all to suit their desires. This is typically achieved with the epoxy putty application or through sanding them. There are others that will swap and purchase parts from other collectors. Some dolls are composed of legs, heads, arms and all other parts that are manufactured individually by different companies. That is how deep things can go.

The soft and slick vinyl is less easy to paint compared to the resin material. Faceups are quite common here. It is the method of painting the face of a doll, but is not limited to the normal definition of make up. Here, every tiny detail including the lips and the eyebrows are painted over. Everything is subject to modifications.

Faceups and body blushing are generally accomplished using acrylic paint, which is applied with airbrushes or regular brushes, watercolor pencils and many more. It is also coated using sprayed on layer of clear matte sealant. This is done for the purpose of protection. Another thing to note is that these actions are always done by hand, even the ones from large companies.

The skill it takes to do these modifications are quite considerable. BJD eyes alone are extremely detailed and those without skill or knowledge will have their attempts seem amateurish by comparison. Therefore, it requires a keen eye for detail, artistic capabilities and a desire and willingness to learn in order to do a remotely competent job.
