Maintaining Unique Bird Houses In The Backyard For The Birds

by Amanda Baird

A lot of people like bird watching, and so they keep unique bird houses in their backyards or their gardens. The design of the house can only do so much, but the better attraction for the birds would be their proper positions and maintenance.

Every bird has its own tastes and preferences. Small birds typically prefer being in an enclosed box. Others would want a more open area where they may just socialise with other birds. Birds would generally prefer single houses with single holes over big houses with lots of bird holes.

There are a lot of types of these small boxes. From unique bird houses to the more simple ones, the key to attracting more birds is its placement. Remember not to place them too near from a feeder because it would be too populated. A tree is better, because it provides as a shade to others.

Remember, feeders and bird baths must not be positioned near the houses. A lot of birds actually don't like noise and populated areas. Also keep in mind to position the holes of the bird houses away from the morning sun and the mid-day sun. The houses might get too warm inside. Another factor to remember is that birds like to blend in with their respective surroundings. Your bird houses' colours might also be factors in attracting birds, especially if their colours are too loud.

Instead of hanging your unique bird houses, considering installing them on posts. Also, make sure that the houses are clean. Usually, people clean their bird houses during the spring. This will also maintain the appearance and durability of the houses, even as they get used year after year. In addition, you are also helping the birds' health. Keeping dirty bird houses can also be dangerous for you and your family.

Adding some bird baths and feeders also help to attract birds. However, do not forget to replace the water and to refill them on a regular basis. Stagnant water is a danger to the birds. Also remember to check the structures for wear and tear. Birds would typically avoid rundown bird houses, since they don't feel comfortable building their nests inside.

When painting the bird houses, make sure that the paint you use would be toxic-free. Birds peck on their surroundings, and they might chip off the paint and accidentally swallow it. Varnishes are also not recommended because of its fumes that may hurt the birds and their nests.

Another thing to consider is the bird houses' ventilation. Birds will avoid those that are too warm or too hot. Holes provide for better ventilation. In addition, there should also be proper drainage holes that are not very big to drain water inside the houses.

By making sure that you've positioned your unique bird houses quite well, birds will be more than happy to visit your garden and make your houses as their nests. Bird watching in your own backyard will surely be better when you get to attract a lot of lovely birds.
