One of the earliest types of traps for moles is the harpoon design. Its design features a sharp spike that will stick into the rodent as it passes. This trap is ideal in areas with clay and sandy soils, particularly if there are no many rocks or a lot of debris. A harpoon trap usually has quite strong springs, hence care should be exercised when handling them and require strong hands when setting them.

The scissors jaw is also another trap that comes in handy when trying to catch moles. It works by catching and holding the rodents when it passes by the trap, in a way that they cannot escape. It can be set up and designed with great ease.

In addition, the user can check to see if a rodent has been captured without actually removing it from the ground. It can also be used in areas with lots of rocks whereby the harpoon variety cannot be utilized. A scissors jaw trap can also be set in deeper tunnels that do not suit the harpoon trap.

Certain traps for catching moles can also use loops. This type of trap set up in a tunnel that is frequently used by moles. Should the mole disturb the soil surrounding it, the trap is sprung, rapidly tightening the loop around the rodents body, killing it instantly. A merit of it is its affordability.

Simple pitfalls can also be used as a way of capturing rodents. This is achieved by digging a hole large enough to bury a container within a tunnel that the rodents frequently pass through. If a mole passes through the tunnel, it will just fall into the container and trapped until it is freed. This is the best method to use if a homeowner wishes to capture the rodents alive without harming them.

A choker mole trap is constructed along similar lines to a bear trap. It is made up of two stamped metal wickets held together by a hinge on each side to form something that looks like a folding table. A large spring is suspended at the center of the hinges, together with a downward facing trigger. The metal prongs located at the devices bottom are held apart until a pin is inserted, prying them apart.

When a mole tunnel is figured out running parallel to the ground surface, the trap is arranged to the ground such that the metal prongs are alongside the tunnel, with the trigger forming a level with the top of the tunnel. Should a mole pass through these mole traps set up, a trigger mechanism is triggered when their back brush it, leading to the snapping together of the prong and killing of the rodent.
