Dogs that Exercise Are Healthier Dogs

by Dirk Gruenberg

Regular exercise makes us feel really good and even healthier. Even dogs do need exercise. It helps maintain their healthy weight as well as strengthen their muscles and cardiovascular conditioning.

Of course, there is also the additional benefit that dogs how spent their energy exercising usually cause less trouble at home. Unfortunately, though, when it comes to the dog' exercise routine, many dog lovers don't know what to do.

The exercise method that most people choose is walking their dog. This is certainly the most common method. Some people upgrade this to some more exercise by taking the dog along on a run or bike ride. Whatever people choose, it will be good for their dogs to be moving.

But never do they know a simple fetch can also be a good exercise for your dog and in return a reward for doing it. Another option is swimming.

Swimming can be a real treat for dogs in terms of exercise. Most dogs love it, and if your dog is elderly and has trouble walking or running, then swimming might be perfect for him. Since the water will support his weight, his muscles won't be in for too much work.

If you have a dog that is super active and seems to never have enough exercise, you might want to think about getting a treadmill for him. Granted, at first he might not be too excited about the equipment, but he will get used to it.

After getting used to the treadmill, dogs easily fall in love with it. This is particularly helpful, if the weather conditions are such that bike rides and long walks are simply not an option at a certain time of year.

Once you are done with the exercise routine, make sure you give him fresh cool water because dogs do dehydrated pretty quickly.

Also keep in mind not to feed your dog right before exercising or immediately afterwards. Give him an hour both ways without food. After all, you would not want him to get sick.
