Each year over 300 million empty ink cartridges are thrown away in America. Every time each one of these ink cartridges is thrown away, a great deal of plastic and metal is needlessly added to landfills nationwide. The environmental benefits of recycling ink cartridges in lieu of throwing them away is compelling. Beyond the environmental benefits, it's clear that great economic benefits could also be obtained if consumers were more informed about how to reuse or recycle their empty cartridges.
When a cartridge is tossed its plastic parts take roughly 1,000 years to decompose. This sloth like rate of biodegrading means that hundreds of years from now, a discarded ink cartridge will still be decomposing in American landfills. Landfills only have so much capacity. Recycling ink cartridges can contribute to saving some of that space. In addition, the plastic found in these cartridges is easily recyclable into perfectly operational new ones. Since a refilled or recycled cartridge of ink works just as well, it's wise to recycle when possible.
It takes roughly three and a half quarts of oil to produce a single ink cartridge. Since the earth's oil reserves are limited, recycling ink cartridges makes a great deal of economic sense. Since every quart of oil burned contributes to a less healthy atmosphere, recycling ink cartridges helps people to breathe cleaner air.
There are also economic advantages to reusing or recycling your ink toner, since every piece of plastic or metal that is obtained via recycling lessens the amount of components that must be shipped and processed. Since these raw materials cost far more money to manufacture than to reuse, recycling can also save electronics companies a lot of cash. In turn, the companies may pass these savings onto their customers in the form of lower prices.
In summary, there are an incredible number of ink cartridges that are being wasted in landfills. Failing to recycle ink cartridges has major financial and environmental drawbacks. Landfill space is reduced. The air becomes more polluted. Scarce resources are needlessly consumed. Do your part in improving the quality of the air and the economy by recycling when you can.
