We spend our entire adult lives trying to recreate the skin we had as a baby. We use lotions that are enhanced with age defying ingredients. We spend hundreds of dollars on skin care products in an effort to bring back that smooth softness we didn't think to enjoy when we were tiny. Your baby will grow up with the type of skin that others envy and will pick up where you left off because you instilled this habit early in life. Here are a few hints to help you make sure that your baby's skin care is taken care of.
Would it surprise you to learn that you don't need to give your infant a bath every night? For the most part newborns and very young infants stay pretty clean. They stay so clean because they cannot move around on their own. Because they are immobile, a baby's parents are easily able to control what a baby can get into. Baths only need to be given two or three times each week if you keep your newborn son or daughter's face clean. When babies learn to crawl and walk, however, you need to give them baths more frequent.
You should always check the label on your baby's skin care products. Avoid any baby skin care products that have dyes, added fragrances, parabens and phthalates. These ingredients could irritate your baby's skin and cause rashes and other skin conditions to develop. You don't want to ruin your skin care efforts by accidentally causing a rash or other condition to develop Choose skin care products that won't irritate your baby's skin. To make sure that the products you use are good, ask your pediatrician for skin care reccomendations.
This will keep you from accidentally burning your baby or cooling him off too much.
Two extra precautions that you should take to protect your baby against sun damage are hats and using umbrellas for shade. If your son or daughter does develop a sunburn (even with all of the precautions you have taken) you can treat it with a damp cool cloth a few times a day. When you first bring your new baby home from the hospital it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the task of keeping the baby's skin clean. You might find yourself fighting the urge to bathe and clean the baby too often. The truth is that taking proper care of your baby's skin does not have to be difficult. It won't take long for you to realize that practicing proper baby skin care involves little more than basic common sense and keeping dirt and irritants away from your baby. You'll get the hang of it soon enough so don't panic.
