The skin care industry is such a big market because many of us crave the skin we had years ago. We massage ourselves with moisturizers. Image plays a large part in today's society so why wouldn't we want beautiful, shining skin. It is true that people with the most gorgeous skin obtained naturally, started off young and developed good skincare habits early on. Here are a few hints to help you make sure that your baby's skin care is taken care of.
Your baby's bath can be short; it does not have to be long. In fact, keeping your newborn in the bath for too long can actually be harmful! Your baby's bath only needs to be a few minutes long--only enough time to get wet, get soapy and get rinsed. After rinsing off the baby, apply a little bit of lotion or moisturizer and then towel her dry. Dry your baby's skin completely or skin rashes or yeast infections can develop. After all, newborn's skin has lots of little folds and ripples that moisture can hide in. Make sure you use a soft towel! Before giving your son or daughter new toys, clothes or letting him or her sleep on new bedding, make sure everything (except the baby of course) gets washed in gentle and hypoallergenic detergent. The wash will help get rid of things that could irritate your baby's skin. We do this even as adults because it just makes good sense to do so. Don't you usually wash new cloth-based purchases before you wash or use them?
Don't be too cavalier with your baby's umbilical cord stump. Don't toy with it. Swab the stump with rubbing alcohol a few times a day. Leave it alone the rest of the time. In fact, you don't want to bathe your baby in a bath until after the umbilical cord stump falls off. Fold down your newborn's diaper so that the top ridge doesn't irritate the umbilical cord. The stump is very sensitive so you want to make sure that it does not get irritated. The stump will leave behind a spot on your baby--talk to your pediatrician about how to best care for that spot.
Lukewarm is a good compromise in temperature because it will keep you from accidentally burning (or freezing) your baby.
Baby skin care extends beyond the baby's face and involves taking care of the rest of the baby's body as well.
