Sailing on a yacht is a pleasurable experience whether it is for a holiday or as a hobby. The important thing to remember, even if you only plan on sailing for a couple of weeks in the summer, is to get the right training. The RYA competent crew course will teach you what you need to know.
It is important if you're inexperienced at sailing on the ocean to take it seriously. Sailing on the ocean can be dangerous and nobody should take it lightly. And that's why it is so important that boat owners or crew take a sailing course to learn the basics and gain the needed knowledge to cope with emergency situations if they occur.
The foundation course that most people do when starting out with sailing is called the competent crew course and is 5 days long. It doesn't matter if you have had no experience at all; this course is open to complete beginners. This course is the best way to get a foundation of skills for sailing in a safe yet fun environment.
By the end of the course you will have enough understanding and experience to be a crew member on a cruising yacht. The competent crew course and will teach you what you need to know about sails, navigation and rope skills. You will also learn how to deal with weather situations, emergencies and how to moor the boat correctly. These skills are taught in a fun and safe environment where you can ask the instructors all the questions you want answered.
These are all things that become much easier and more enjoyable when they are taught in a safe environment by a professional skipper. Arguments always break out when getting taught by a family member or friend. A good sailing school will ensure that the teaching is fun while being educational.
It is up to you whether you do the competent crew course in 5 straight days or if you would rather split it over 2 weekends. Some people enjoyed it so much that they continued learning with the RYA day skipper course which is the next level up.
It has an RYA day skipper theory component that you have to do as well as the day skipper practical part. Most sailing training companies will advise you to do the theory part first so that you have all the theoretical knowledge needed for the practical part.
The day skipper practical is a far more challenging course than the competent crew course and takes a minimum of 5 days to complete. The RYA day skipper theory is over 40 hours and can be done as an intensive week, over a series of short sessions or as distance learning.
Within the theory section of the course you will learn about navigation, meteorology, weather conditions and seamanship to ensure that you are equipped to handle emergency situations and know the correct distress calls to use in those situations. You should study this course content thoroughly as there are 2 exam papers at the end.
The RYA day skipper can be done on either tidal or non-tidal waters. This will depend on which sailing company trains you choose. The tidal day skipper qualification is more comprehensive and includes the non-tidal. But if you train on non-tidal waters and get a non-tidal certification; you won't be able to skipper in tidal waters. So it's up to you which type of qualification you would prefer. Before starting the course you will need to have some foundational knowledge and some experience of sailing and boating.
Some people will be coming from having a couple weeks sailing experience and others will have had not much experience at all but will come straight from the competent crew course. It doesn't matter which course you came from because the practical day skipper course will teach you about sea navigation, the important sailing rules you need to know, know the differences between boat engines and also get a taste of night cruising.
The successful completion of this course will provide you with the ability to skipper a cruising yacht in familiar waters by day. With the RYA day skipper course you are then legally allowed to skipper a boat up to 24m in length and in category 5 or 6 waters.
