Interesting Facts About Swiss Military Watches

by Fausto Capello

International Watch Company is the world's premier maker of Swiss Army watches. It was set up by Florentino Ariosoto Jones in 1868 who wanted to amalgamate expertise of Swiss products and the breakthroughs of engineering thus producing the Swiss Army watch.

Jones started the company in Schaffhausen, a town in Switzerland, which was so backwards during the Industrial Revolution. Swiss people were sceptical of Jones' abilities. They were believing that the product will not yield good results and they would end up losing a living.

Johann Heinrich Moser chose the city for the location of his first hydroelectric plant. Jones and Moser eventually met up and, together, established the first Swiss Army watch plant in the town.

With the hydroelectric power plant, electricity was established to the picture thus, enhancing Swiss Army watches' quality by year 1888. After the First World War, International Watch Company finally provided their workers proper compensation benefits, including health insurance, pension, and housing plans for them and their families.

The International Watch Company has consistently been at the vanguard of Swiss Army watch technology. It was the first to introduce electronic batteries in their watches in the 1940's, and they invested heavily in quartz movement.

The company fell on hard times in the mid 1970's when gold prices soared. The result was that it was no longer beneficial to ship high quality Swiss Army watches to the United Statesand the other parts of the world. Japan began to export cheap quartz clocks that were sad knock offs of the original Swiss Army watches.

International Watch Company reacted by employing premier designers and engineers with the likes of Porsche. This led to luxurious, high end fashion and jewellery watches which helped regain the consumers' trust and appeal towards Swiss Army watches.

Most important of all, the company has kept detailed logs of every Swiss Army watch it has made since 1880. Owners of a Swiss Army watch made by the International Watch Company can contact them and find out what components went into their watch and when the watch was made. The company claims that they still maintain parts for all of their Swiss Army watches, and that even the antique ones from the 1800's can be repaired.

Today, the company's Swiss Army watches range in price from the low $100's to the expensive $1000 (U.S. Dollars). Every year the company auctions off Swiss Army watches to benefit a school in Mali.
