How To Add Scents To Your Homemade Candles

by Wilber Breger

Finding out how to make scented candles is rather simple, though actually making them involves practice and skill to get the scent the right mix for the amount of wax you are using.

Making scented candles involves following some basic procedures, however since essential oils differ within the intensity within their scents, it takes experience and practice to gauge the concentrations and adjust accordingly. As a hobby, candle making will not cost a lot of money, but it's not exactly safe as there are chances of burns from the hot wax.

Principle equipment one needs are: a double boiler, a mold, along with a method to obtain heat. The rest of the things you will need are: wax, wicks and essential oils. Although molds are optional as you are can make candles by repeated dipping and cooling, but molds add an element of ease to your whole process. There are certain types of candles you can only make with molds.

The steps are extremely basic. Fill the bottom pot of the double boiler with water, and put it on to boil. Put your wax in the top pot of your double boiler. You should buy wax in chip or block form. Chips melt quicker, and there is no need to cut into pieces. When you have enough wax inside the top pot, immerse it within the hot water to melt the wax.

While waiting for the wax to melt, prepare your molds if you are making candles that require them. Set the wick for each candle, since it will be hard to fix them once you have poured the wax. Whenever the wax has melted and is hot and liquid, you are able to bring it from off of the heat.

This is actually the part when you mix in the oils for fragrance. Pour in the correct amount, stir quickly but thoroughly after which you can begin to pour the wax into your molds. If the wax cools too much and is no longer very fluid just place it back on a lower heat, being careful not to cause the essential oils to evaporate too much.

Slow pouring will help to avoid introducing bubbles into the process which could ruin the finished product, and it also minimizes wick movement. You can chose to use ice to cool the mold and wax faster, or just let it set aside to cool naturally. When everything is cool and the wax has set, you are able to extract your candle.
