What Command Should I Teach My Dog First?

by Dirk Gruenberg

Everybody knows that dogs are very intelligent and loyal. Most people even consider their dog as their best friend. Having a dog around us always means joy, happiness, and they are even prepared to protect us.

Some puppy training will make your life and your dog's life much easier. It is recommended to start with basic obedience training. But what are the individual steps and in which order should you teach the commands to your dog?

The most basic command is the "Sit" command. So this should be taught first. Very often you not only want to hope your dog behaves but you want to be able to rely on him following this command. When he does it, praise him and have a little treat ready to reward your pet.

The most important goal your puppy has is to make you happy - since you are the pack leader. You show him that by giving him a little treat. Over time instead of giving him the treat just praise him enthusiastically. Then, when he follows your "Sit" command, it is time to move on to "stay."

This is the second basic obedience training for your new pup. Staying will reinforce the first command "sit".

What is the difference between "stay" and "sit"? Using the "stay" command properly you can walk away for a short period of time and make your dog wait for you until you come back.

The next command in this order is the "lie down" command. And this is the correct way of how to successfully teach it to your pet: Make your dog "sit", then "stay".

Have a treat ready, which you now move close to the floor. Your dog's instincts make him move towards the treat, and he will eventually lie down. Give him the treat now. And don't forget: Repetition is the mother of all skills.

Fifteen minutes per day will be enough for your dog to learn and remember these basic commands. After you are done with these commands, then there are many more commands that you could teach him.
