Adult Diaper Rash: Preventive Measures

by Brent Herman

Babies are not the only ones who may suffer from diaper rash but also adults. This is one of the main concerns of people who are taking care of their elderly family members as it may lead to irritation which may bring more discomfort for their loved ones. Commonly, the possible causes of rash on adults are also the same with those of babies; this may be due to the skin's prolonged exposure to urine or feces. Although there are also some cases wherein the cause of skin irritation is the type of cloth being used in manufacturing the diaper.

There is nothing to worry about, though, for the problem can be avoided with the help of some preventive measures. First of all, you need to observe cleanliness. With proper hygiene, the presence of bacteria and germs can be avoided. You also need to check the diaper if it is already wet or if there is already presence of waste and change it right away if it is already wet or dirty.

When cleaning the skin, make sure to thoroughly clean the entire area with the use of a soft clean cloth. Also, it helps putting of anti-rash powder after cleaning the skin. Frequent changing ensures that the skin can be kept clean and dry and free of irritation. As you know, a wet and dirty diaper can be a great dwelling place for bacteria. And, for sure, you already have an idea on what may happen next if it already has a lot of bacteria.

You also need to be aware with regards to the type of diaper that you use. It would be a good idea to use those that are disposable since they do not require you to wear plastic pants anymore. Wearing of a plastic pant is only required when using diapers that are made of cloth in order to prevent the urine and feces from leaking. The pitfall in using such pants is that the temperature inside the diaper also increases. And, when the temperature increases, moisture also starts to develop.

Aside from good ventilation, disposable diapers also absorb wetness way better than those that are made of cloth. You may also consider using anti-irritation powder, gels, creams, and lotions. These products can help prevent the rubbing of the skin with the cloth of the diaper. With less friction, there are also lesser possibilities of having skin irritation. You can find these products being sold at drugstores around your area. Lastly, you should see to it that the diaper you will be using is of appropriate size; it should not be too tight or too loose. Make sure that it firmly fits the wearer's waist.
