The Nationals of Washington D.C. contend within the Eastern Division of the National League in Major League Baseball. They substitute for the prior D.C. team of the identical name that's occasionally known as the Senators. The enterprise was an extension that originated in Montreal in the year 1969 as the Expos.
The team played there for years, peaking in success in the early 1980's before began a gradual decline. Despite their diminished success, they continued to sell tickets throughout their time in Canada. In their first and last game as the Expos, the Nationals played against the New York Mets.
The franchise was nearly cancelled in 2001, but instead the league bought it in 2002. They moved the team to D.C. in 2005 and renamed it. This was the first time a Major League Baseball team had been moved since 1972 when D.C. lost its team to Arlington, Texas. The Nats are one of two teams to have never played in the World Series, the other being the Seattle Mariners.
Washington is considered home to several baseball teams throughout the years. The traditional Senators were a beginning member of the American League and the legacy alone has sold a lot of tickets over time. In the year of 1924 the initial D.C. team won the World Series and then in 1925 and 1933 they claimed pennants. A second Senators team came along in the 60's, although they did not enjoy a lot success, they won a lot of enthusiast loyalty.
The step wasn't an easy one to make. The Baltimore Orioles owner, Peter Angelos, just didn't want to share the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area sector. This was relatively ironic as it was the owner of the initial Senators who allowed a squad to relocate into Baltimore in the first place. To manage the argument, an agreement was developed that all broadcast privileges with the Nationals would be maintained through the Orioles. Tickets have consistently sold, keeping both franchises strong.
