How to Choose the Best Baby Monitor

by Sophia Anderson

Today baby monitors do more than transmit and pick up sounds. But these days, baby monitors are definitely more advanced than only being able to simply pick up or transmit sound waves. Some come with video monitoring as well. Finding the right monitoring system can be difficult at first, because there are so many options. Now, you might be thinking to yourself, that you just want to find the simplest monitoring "contraption" which has the littlest feedback squeal, and want to keep things as simple as possible. Here are some of the things that you should think about when you go shopping for your family's next infant monitoring system.

What size monitor should you get? Some parents want something small and non obtrusive. If you want a more extensive system, you may need to find a way to make more room for it because it may be larger, however if you have a larger home or apartment, then you could easily fit a larger system into your home. Portable monitors may have to be carried around, and can easily be left on the counter somewhere or in another room and forgotten about, so you should also consider how you will be using the monitor in the first place. These are all questions to ask yourself when it is time to buy. It really all depends on whether or not you will be in one room as well, generally , if you will only be using it in one room, a larger monitor is welcomed, and if you will be moving around a lot, then something lightweight will work better.

Many of the budget-friendly monitors operate at 49 megahertz, so be careful about that. This particular frequency will contain the greatest amount of interference - must be why they're so cheap to buy. These monitors will also give you some surprises - incoming phone calls from cell phones, or even brief phone conversations from people around you, or baby monitors from other houses/apts close to you. Higher frequencies drop out all of the extra noise and are easier to operate. You'll find the best overall in sound quality with less interference is 2.4 gigs.

How many options do you want? Extensive systems take up more space, so if you do not have that kind of option, you may want to consider single receivers or base stations. If you have more space available in your home, a system which includes multiple receivers may be a better option. If you are going to choose a multiple receiver system, find one which has both inbound and outbound capabilities, so that more than one person can use it. Also, if you choose to have more than one receiver, it will allow you to monitor more than one child consecutively, and you also won't have to worry about always carrying it around with you.

There is a lot to take in when you want to purchase your baby monitor. Find out if you want your system to be extensive, assess how much you are willing to spend, and consider whether or not the system will get in the way of your other daily activities as well. Don't be afraid to take the time to do your research in the end, because you will easily be able to make your decision once you do.
