Dealing With Nappy Rash

by Joan Lovelace

A baby that has nappy rash may be fractious and find it difficult to sleep due to the discomfort. This condition is common but never the less it can be upsetting for mother and child. A mild irritation will make the skin appear sore and inflamed but a severe bout could mean that the small spots weep or even break on the top. An outbreak of diaper dermatitis may last a day or two but it could take weeks to clear completely.

The skin on the top of the thighs, the buttocks and the genitals is highly sensitive, once irritated the area looks red, sore and inflamed. At this stage changing the child's diaper may become difficult, removing the wet or soiled cloth will cause discomfort. Putting a clean diaper on freshens but the baby's skin will still be sore to the touch.

Babies have to wear diapers and this skin condition is most common in children that are in their first year of life. If you can grasp the cause of the outbreak and understand the trigger then you may be able to keep further outbreaks to a minimum. In many cases a process of trial and elimination will help you to get to grips with the root cause of any skin irritation.

It's a vicious circle, the baby wears a diaper, it becomes wet and soiled so the child's sensitive skin absorbs the contents of the cloth. Check the diaper frequently to see if it is wet or soiled, if it is then change it straight away. Urine can be strong and wearing a diaper that is soaked or soiled will inevitably make the baby's skin feel uncomfortable.

Babies who are being weaned can experience bouts of nappy rash, changing baby's diet can trigger an outbreak. If the child has suddenly been fed solids and fruit juice instead of milk then the change may affect their digestive system causing skin rashes. It is important to launder diapers in non biological washing powder, this powder is chemical free and less harmful to young and sensitive skin. The newly washed diapers should be rinsed until they are free from soap and hung to air dry if possible. After you have found laundry products that have no effect on the child's skin stick with them, changing brands could cause rashes.

A baby's skin can soon become infected if it is not kept clean so the child's skin should be washed and creamed in between changes. After wiping babies bottom take some cotton wool dunked into warm water and wash the skin carefully. Make sure that you dry it properly and cream the area thoroughly before putting the new diaper on. Let the child go diaper free and enjoy a kick about on the changing mat, this will allow the air to penetrate the skin.

Nappy rash is an unpleasant condition that can lead to baby and mother becoming upset. In general the condition will clear of its own accord but any young mother who is upset and unsure should contact the nurse and seek advice. The nurse or the physician may have some tips that you could follow.
