Applying Lavender Oil For Nappy Rash And Additional Conditions

by Linda Lamont

The people of ancient Rome were renowned for their public baths, and had a word that meant "to wash" - lavare. This word is the root of the modern word lavender, the substance used in our society to treat a number of ailments. We use lavender oil for nappy rash, for headaches and for burns, and that's just for starters. Why this stuff is so useful, and not just for washing, will be explained as follows.

The oil has two properties, it relieves pain as an analgesic, and it is anti-inflammatory. These properties make it extremely effective against a variety of common ailments, though it cannot cure everything. But its anti-inflammatory property is what makes it so good against nappy rash, for example.

The most common cause of nappy rash is usually the baby's own waste dirtying its nappy, and how long the baby is left unchanged. The affected skin will be red, dry and flaky, with bumps and swelling on the affected area. Applying the balm to this area helps to soothe and moisturize the affected skin, and eventually clear the baby's swelling and rash altogether.

The first time that it was noticed how effective the oil was against inflammations was in the early 1900s by Rene Maurice Gattefosse, a noted aromatherapist. When working in his perfumery lab, he sustained a severe burn to one of his hands. He plunged the affected hand into a lavender oil container and found his injury healing as a result.

Burns are healed because this oil's analgesic properties remove the pain the burn causes and does not leave a scar. The additional benefit the oil has is the fact that it is also an anti-biotic, which means burn wounds do not become infected by such treatment. The fruit of Gattefosse's discovery is that most people now treat their first degree burns with this oil.

Another analgesic use that this oil confers is in treatment of headaches. Aromatherapists who practice inhalation therapy treat their patients by having them inhale the oil's scent to soothe their aching head. Additionally, patients can also apply the oil to their temples, which also has a relieving effect.

These are only three examples of the medicinal benefits that we can derive from this oil. In addition to using lavender oil for nappy rash, burns and headaches, the ointment can be used to treat a number of other minor conditions too. As natural remedies go, it can be seen as a genuine benefit.
